Chain-link and welded mesh fencing are often talked about as the same thing, yet they are different products at different prices for different jobs. Choose wrong and you either get a cheap fence that will not last or over-specify and waste budget. This guide separates chain-link, welded mesh and expanded metal, and shows which suits houses, vacant land and factories.

Chain-link — what it is and where it fits

Chain-link is woven wire stretched between steel or concrete posts. It is the cheapest steel fencing per metre, which makes it the default for vacant land, sports areas and large boundaries where demarcation matters more than looks. It is less rigid than welded mesh, dents under impact and is hard to re-tension; in humid areas specify galvanised or PVC-coated wire.

Welded mesh — stronger and tidier

Welded mesh panels are rigid sheets of welded wire, plain or with folds for extra stiffness. They hold their shape, do not sag over time and look orderly, which suits houses, schools, factories and warehouses. They cost more than chain-link but pay back over time because they need almost no re-tensioning or repair.

Expanded metal — security plus screening

Expanded metal is sheet steel slit and stretched into a one-piece mesh. It is strong and harder to see through than welded mesh, so it screens as well as secures. It suits homes wanting moderate privacy, or infill panels within a box-steel frame for a designed look. Edges are sharp, so proper framing is essential.

Posts and footings decide the lifespan

Whichever mesh you choose, posts and footings determine whether the fence stands for years or leans within months. Set posts deep enough with concrete around the base, at 2–3 m spacing; wider than that and panels bow or wire sags. The commonly missed detail is capping the post tops — open tops let water sit inside and rot the post from within.

Corrosion protection by location

Ordinary sites are fine with two coats of rust primer under a topcoat. Coastal locations like Chonburi, and factories with chemical vapour, deserve hot-dip galvanising or PVC-coated wire, because salt and acidic air accelerate corrosion sharply. That extra spend adds years of life and cuts repair costs.

Which to choose

Vacant land and large budget-driven boundaries: chain-link. Houses and factories wanting a tidy, durable line: welded mesh. Homes wanting strength plus screening with some design: expanded metal or box-steel frames with infill panels. Whatever the mesh, resolve posts, footings and corrosion protection first.
